About the Poetry Out Loud Program

Our local Poetry Out Loud is one of the best run in the state, thanks to the enthusiastic response in the schools, great volunteers and donors in the community who recognize the importance of the programs’ impact.  These funds provide a small stipend to the POL coach, and hosting the county-level competition has costs, but most importantly the funds guarantee that our chosen representative for the state competition will have necessary financial support to attend the competition in Sacramento, and perhaps all the way to Washington D.C.! Since 2007 over 2000 Tuolumne County high school students have participated at the school level.

Thanks to the generous support from TCAA members as well as local businesses, including Front Porch Inc., Blue Mountain Minerals, Umpqua Bank and Hive-arts.org, more than 50 students have competed in the County-wide Poetry Out Loud Competition. We appreciate any amount that you might care to donate to this worthwhile program:

“We’re very pleased to bring this program to Tuolumne County teenagers,” states Connie O’Connor, executive director of the Tuolumne County Arts Alliance.

Poetry Out Loud is one of TCAA’s many arts education programs, but is the only program that exclusively targets high school age students. The Tuolumne County Arts Alliance, works in partnership with the California Arts Council, to bring this program to students throughout Tuolumne County.

Poetry Out Loud is a valuable method for introducing students to the world of classical poetry. Students become inspired when they hear, read and perform it out loud. Two gifts of this program are each student’s increased self-confidence with speaking in public and a stronger understanding of complex ideas and imagery presented in poems.

In California, Poetry Out Loud is sponsored by the California Arts Council, who invited TCAA to participate beginning in 2007-2008. At the time we were one of only 29 counties statewide to be in the program. Kristin Margolis, Former State Director of California Poetry Out Loud commented, “Tuolumne County’s participation is growing. We’re impressed with the talented students from your area. We hope the kids get involved and become immersed in poetry!” Nationally, the POL program is presented by the National Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Tuolumne County Arts Alliance, a 501c3 CA non-profit organization, is Tuolumne County’s designated public agency for the arts, and works in partnership with the California Arts Council.
